It’s the start of a fresh, new year. You know what that means? The “best trends of 2016 ” and “things to look for in 2017” lists are here! No matter your area of interest, there is a list for it: food, travel, or web design (which is of course is one of our favorite topics here at MINDSCAPE).

I’ve searched the Internet, read article after article (so you don’t have to) and compiled my findings about some of the biggest trends in web design for 2017. Don’t worry, I’m not going to get all techy and start talking about coding and UX. I’m going to keep it a little lighter and stick to the stylistic trends.

So whether you are looking to do a total website redesign in 2017 or simply refresh the look and feel of a few pages on your site, here are some of the year’s biggest trends you might want to try.

1. Geometric Details


If you are looking for unique way to add some visual interest to your web pages, try experimenting with one of 2017’s biggest design trendsand add geometric shapes to your website pages. Solid colored shapes in a design are a great way to fill white space on a page or highlight your brand’s colors.

Pro tip – Use the same shape throughout your design for a cohesive look and feel.

2. Big, Bold Typography


Attention grabbing headlines are one design trend that isn’t going away in 2017, it’s just evolving.  I came across a quote from Webflow that does a great job of summing up this trend, it said “big” and “bold” doesn’t necessarily refer to the weight of the font! Rather, it’s about dedicating significant screen real estate to a single, simple yet all-encompassing statement about the product or service.”

Headlines like the one above can serve a dual purpose, showing a little creativity, while also driving home the main message of the page.  And it’s not just the words you choose that convey a message,

The style of font you use is also very important, because certain fonts evoke certain feelings and emotions from viewers.

3. Colors, Colors, Colors!

There are 2 main color schemes that you will start seeing more of in 2017: primary colors and organic colors.


Bold Primary Colors

Attention grabbing shades of blue, green, and red that make you stop and take notice have been utilized by more and more websites lately. In the minimalist designs that seem to be the latest trend, these colors are a way to show some personality and originality.


Soothing Organic Colors

In another very different vein of the minimalist trend that can be seen around the web, are simple colors that can be found in nature. In fact,  Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2017 is Greenery “a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring”. For those of you who aren’t familiar, Pantone are the trend-setters, taste-makers and self-described “world-renowned authority on color and provider of color systems”. So, expect to see Greenery popping up across the web in 2017.
